Fostering Journey

Taking the first step to becoming a foster-carer can often be the biggest. With so many unknowns, the process can feel daunting. But once you’re on that journey and you welcome a child or young person into your home and family, see them smile, grow in confidence, and find their way in life, you’ll never look back.

The process to become a foster carer can take four to six months depending on individual circumstances.

You will be asked to submit an application form.

  • Step 5

Attend a four-day preparation course to gain a deeper understanding of the fostering role, and what’s involved.

  • Step 6

You will be allocated a Social Worker who will complete your assessment by visiting you at home between eight and ten times to get to know you and your family. We will undertake a range of checks including Disclosure Scotland and Local Authority checks. As part of the assessment, we will also require you to undertake a medical assessment. Go to a fostering panel, where your completed assessment (Form F) will be presented, and a final decision made about your approval.
